Job Summary:

The Category Manager is responsible for developing and executing the sourcing strategies for Materne’s indirect material and services throughout North America. They provide the organization with deep expertise in sourcing and purchasing of indirect materials and services. The categories could include, but not be limited to: (MRO Supplies, Garments, IT Hardware, Telecom, Travel, E-procurement, Utilities and Services). They are a self-starter that is capable of providing strategic and tactical leadership across multiple categories and be responsible for ($30,000,000 - $40,000,000) in spend.   The Category Manager  is responsible for developing, executing and managing corporate sourcing initiatives for indirect categories and performing complex data analysis to identify new sourcing and other cost optimization opportunities to generate cost savings and synergies for various indirect categories.  They are responsible for negotiating complex / competitive programs and communicating to Corporate and Plant Operations the value propositions associated with each category proposal. He / She works collaboratively with internal user departments to facilitate, optimize, and execute the purchase and corporate governance of these indirect expense categories across the organization. 

Job Responsibilities & Tasks:

  • Responsible for all indirect activities across both factories and can include distribution, as well as Sales and Marketing offices
    • Develop best practice sourcing methodologies in order to negotiate and manage Indirect Procurement programs that will impact the entire company.
    • Each market engagement will require in depth Market Sector Strategy/Review that will provide a “real time” pulse of the market in order to gain competitive insight, provide category direction and optimize benefits of each category initiative.
    • Establish and manage SLA’s and KPI’s for each category
      • Institute reporting capabilities associated with category specific activities
    • Develop both internal and external communications to brief management and update / instruct suppliers on performance levels and program requirements are essential.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
    • Bring together a diverse group of requirements reflected within the customer base
      • Assemble these into a consolidated market RFI / RFP event
      • Design a communication unique to the needs of the category for the sourcing event
      • Develop an appropriate grading system with core constituent input and analyze results in order to support their findings and present finale recommendation(s).
    • Define measure, analyze and deploy company-wide category strategies and improvement projects across the company. In addition,
    • Create and incorporate appropriate performance levels for suppliers and accurately measure, forecast and report ongoing program cost savings. 
    • Connect cross functionally to drive change initiatives.
      • Measured through performance score cards and reviews, compliance communications, and presentations, as well as various other program management tools and tactics the Indirect Procurement Category Manager utilizes

Position Requirements:


  • BS in related fields (Business Administration, Finance, Supply Chain Management, Engineering)


  • Must have 3 - 5 years of experience in strategic and tactical indirect material and services sourcing to be considered for this position
  • Experience in contract development, execution and management.
  • Team leadership in a cross functional environment, project management skills (very important)


  • Planning, organization, and execution skills,
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
    • Excellent numerical and analytic skills; Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Leadership / Team Building
  • C.P.M. or APICS certification preferred
  • Advanced MS Excel skills (e.g. Pivot Tables, V-Lookup, etc.)
  • Root cause analysis skills
  • Ability to derive insight from large amounts of data from diverse sources
  • Strong skills on specification and contract writing


  • Must be able to travel 30 - 50% of the time.
  • Must be able to lift 30 – 40 lbs.
  • Must be able to work for a minimum of 8 hours per day
